Example #025 - Design growth into your product

Hey — it’s Deepak

It may be obvious by now, but I just love E-commerce brands.

Reading time - 1 min

This is a great way to design growth into your product.

Temu’s example

Goal - Increase average order value/Revenue

1. Gamification

You may not care when you are given a prize directly like in those pop-ups “Subscribe to get 10% OFF” but chances are you’ll want to spin this and win.

2. Loss aversion principle

Because people perceive losses as psychologically more severe than gains.

For example, people would rather avoid losing $20 than gain $20.

You’ve already won but have to create an account now to claim that prize, which most users will do, because they don’t want to lose.

3. Anchoring bias

Our initial impressions heavily influence our subsequent decisions.

These offers use the initial discount or free shipping threshold as an "anchor" that shapes our perception of the products that we will later buy.

Leading us to buy more than we actually wanted to.

Appreciate you reading. It really means a lot.
